Birthdays on a Budget

Birthdays on a Budget

Whether you want to avoid the expense of a bouncy castle and custom cake, or you just want to treat your child to a birthday party that doesn't feel like the one they attended last week, these party ideas will have you just as excited as your kids.

Creative, budget-friendly themes:

Bubble Land: A magical place where bubbles and balloons rule the day. Decorate the walls with circles of colorful blue and silver construction paper. Cover the party floor with clear bubble-wrap that pops underfoot. Have balloons scattered about the floor. Bottles of blowing bubbles and bubblegum lollipops make great party favors. An inexpensive bubble machine can provide outdoor entertainment.

Make-a-Mess: Great for outside events, because what kid doesn't love to make a mess? Silly string and water balloons or squirt guns filled with colored water are a must. Make sure guests bring an extra set of clothes. Serve messy foods like sloppy Joes. Create a decorate-your-own-cupcake table for a messy, fun party activity. Then have a contest to see who can eat their cupcake the fastest without using hands.

Ocean Explorers: Newspaper pirate hats are easy to make and won't cost a dime. Serve Chips Ahoy!, Swedish Fish and Goldfish® crackers as snacks. Send kids on a treasure hunt by hiding plastic or chocolate coins around the yard.

Backyard Carnival: Face painting and classic games like ring toss, bean bag toss and golf putting can be put together with items already in your garage. Offer small prizes purchased in the toy section of your local dollar store.

Imaginative, low-cost logistics:

Skip the meal by planning your party after lunch and before dinner. Inviting guests between 2 to 5 p.m. means your guests won't expect a full meal.

Shop discount retailers online like Birthday Express or Partypalooza for party favors and decorations, or visit your local dollar store.

Embrace the digital age by sending electronic invitations and save both paper waste and the cost of stamps. Try e-invitation services like Punchbowl or Pingg, which offer a number of free designs.

No-cost activities can lower the entertaining budget substantially. Tucker kids out with a few of these classic games: Freeze Dance, Musical Chairs, Hot Potato, Charades or your pick of outdoor games.

With a little bit of creativity, you can throw an inexpensive party your child will never forget!
