Keep It Cool ... and Dry

Keep It Cool ... and Dry

You already know lots of grocery items and cleaning supplies require storage in cool and dry places, but these items might surprise you:

Medication should never be exposed to temperatures greater than 86 degrees (even while traveling). Heat, cold, moisture and light can damage medicine and make it less potent. For non-refrigerated items, a cool, dark dresser drawer or kitchen cabinet works well. Also remove the cotton ball after purchase because it can harbor moisture.

Perfume and cologne may come in bottles that display beautifully, but light and heat can alter the scent. If you paid a pretty penny for them, store your fragrances in a dresser drawer or closet shelf away from direct sunlight.

Yoga mats can break down and become brittle from heat or sunlight, so the trunk of your car may not be the best storage option. Fortunately, they're light enough to lug from your home or office each time you work out.

Leather coats, boots and handbags don't fare well under sunlight or moist conditions. For long-term storage, use a cloth garment bag rather than plastic, which can trap moisture.

Cosmetics spoil in heat and humidity. Organic and all-natural cosmetics decay even faster because plant-derived ingredients, alternative preservatives or no preservatives are not as long-lasting. Store somewhere other than the bathroom.

Record vinyl is making a comeback. If you want your collection to last, keep it away from humidity, heat and direct sunlight which can cause melting and warping.

Pearls are an organic gem vulnerable to drying by heat and sunlight. They can also deteriorate if exposed to perfumes, makeup and hair care products. Pearls should be the last thing you put on, and the first thing you take off.

Old photographs preserve your family heritage, and you can preserve them by keeping them away from the garage or attic, where temperature cycles dramatically even through a single day. Also avoid moisture-rich basements. For particularly valuable photos, consider acid-free archival containers stored inside a closet.
